In the fall of 2010, threatened with the demolish of the community space known as La Casita, the Whittier Parents Committee
staged a 43 day sit-in to win the rights to the community space located on the grounds of Whittier Elementary School in Pilsen.
This project is a collaborative design effort between Whittier Parents Committee and Architecture for Humanity Chicago to
rehabilitate La Casita and improve the overall quality of the environment in and around this important community space.
The new La Casita will incorporate living walls that will filter the air and act as an educational hub for dissemination of sustainable
strategies to improve the environmental literacy and activism of the community.
