WHO WE ARE | WHAT WE DO
Design Makes Change is a volunteer group of designers, artists, and educators living and working in Chicago. Our mission is to encourage designers from all disciplines to understand the challenges in their city and help build cleaner, safer, and better neighborhoods in Chicago and beyond.
We partner with organizations, community leaders, businesses, and educational bodies to organize and support a series of annual design competitions that address environmental, social, and infrastructural issues for change.
We see local issues as a mirror to many issues prevalent in all American cities and around the world: our industries that support us also hurt our air, water, and soil; issues of gang violence and inadequate food access prevent many of our neighborhoods from thriving; public schools suffer from inadequate funding and consolidation. We see countless opportunities for positive change.
We seek to encourage local designers to understand the challenges in their city and invest through design implementation. Through our design challenges and project support, we strive to create a platform for design that is hyper-local and focuses on a different neighborhood issue each year through a multi-disciplinary focus from the fields of industrial design, graphic design, environmental/space design, interior architecture, and architecture.
